What Does This Tool Do?

The designer generates decorative rosette knot and knot mat layouts, showing the woven structure and over-under path of the design. It can be used to explore square and rectangular knot patterns before tying them in rope, cord or leather.

Acknowledgements

The mathematical approach used in this knot mat and rosette designer is inspired by the work of Nils Kristian Rossing in the book How to Make Rope Mats and Rosettes. The generator uses a parametric equation approach to create woven knot paths that can be visualised and exported for further design work.

In simplified form, the knot paths are generated using combinations of sine and cosine components:

x(t) = ∑ ai cos(fi t) + ∑ bi sin(gi t)
y(t) = ∑ ci sin(fi t) + ∑ di cos(gi t)

By adjusting the amplitudes, frequencies and phase relationships of these components, a wide range of decorative rosette and knot mat structures can be explored.
